“Social entrepreneurship is the process of recognizing and resourcefully pursuing opportunities to create social value. Social entrepreneurs are innovative, resourceful, and results-oriented. They draw upon the best thinking in both the business and nonprofit worlds to develop strategies that maximize their social impact.” ——from Duke CASE
The Social Entrepreneurship program is powered by DKU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. It provides a project-based learning experience connecting the classroom to the real world and leverages students’ creative problem-solving capabilities, interdisciplinary thinking, and an entrepreneurial mindset. The program aims to inspire and equip young talents to become change makers through the framework of social entrepreneurship, which addresses the complex social issues involving culture, environment, human, and business.
Design thinking is the core methodology of this program that has been recognized as one of the most creative and effective tools to address innovation in the modern world. Particularly for non-designers, it provides a new way of looking at problems as well as a systematical approach to developing creative solutions that can be applied in a vast range of topics and disciplines. This program will provide an immersive experience of design thinking from Emphasize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
More, this program emphasizes a field learning component that will direct students to be aware of and engaged with the real world and take the initiative to participate in solving complex problems. Students will become better team players and leaders through close collaboration with teammates and interaction with different stakeholders in the field. Specifically, students will spend two days in the water town – Jinxi to do field study. During the process, they will identify the main challenges facing Jinxi and devise solutions for those challenges, such as cultural heritage, sustainability, tourism economy, and creative industry, applying what they learned from the classroom at Duke Kunshan University.
Machine Learning (ML) nowadays has been attached great attention by academic institutions, intelligent manufactories, and digital business sectors. As a cutting-edge subject of AI, ML has been widely studied and developed by a large group of notable scholars and practitioners and has a predictable application foreground in the region of business, industry, spaceflight and entertainments. “What is Machine Learning?” would be the fundamental learning objective of the MLSS program. Diagnosing disease, predicting weather events, identifying fraud, and personal assistants who anticipate our next desire (Alexa, Siri, Cortana, etc.), we have all heard about the new amazing tasks machine learning can do. However, do you understand how these algorithms work and when we can expect them to work and, perhaps more importantly, when and why they fail? As a data scientist or machine-learning practitioner, you will be asked to explain how your algorithm works when it works and why your algorithm fails. We will discuss reasons why algorithms may fail in this summer. Upon successful completion of the one-week program, participants will receive a certification of attendance delivered by Duke Kunshan University.
Launched in 2017 along with the international Master of Environmental Policy (iMEP) program, this summer program is designed for individuals considering the environmental policy field, interested in improving English language skills, and experiencing the US-style classic education. The program also doubles as a refresher mini-course for incoming iMEP students for a comprehensive overview of the curriculum of the iMEP program.
Students will be briefly introduced to environmental economics, policy and data analysis, environmental science, environmental health and English public speaking skills. Through both lectures and workshops, students will learn important skills such as data analysis, fundamental theories of microeconomics, and analyzing case studies. Because of its small size, Environmental Sustainability program provides an excellent opportunity for students to get to know each other well, to create lifelong friendships, and to expand their professional network.
The study of environmental policy is a language-intensive task. Environmental Sustainability program is very specifically designed to increase proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening to English, in order to develop confidence and facilitate personal adjustment to the culture of U.S. education. Students will be immersed in an English-speaking study environment. Small class size and individual attention from the instructors will give students a concentrated and tailored teaching experience.
The five days program will focus on core academic courses and environmental policy research topics. Students will also attend a workshop on graduate school preparation and receive feedback on their resume. Students will leave the program with a certificate of completion from Duke Kunshan University.
Duke Kunshan Healthcare Big Data Training Program is a one-week immersion program broadly introducing undergraduate students to data analytics through a health lens. Hosted by the Global Health Program at Duke Kunshan University, the Healthcare Big Data Training Program welcomes talented rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors intrigued by the applications of big data technologies in the healthcare industry, such as drug discovery, health monitoring, diagnostics, and precision medicine. We aim to stimulate curiosity in the field of big data through this rigorous yet approachable and fun program. By the end of the program, students will not only be equipped with essential techniques for managing and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data but will also be exposed to advanced machine-learning methodologies. Along the way, students will develop a working proficiency in several data analysis tools.
Students applying to this program should be motivated to learn cutting-edge data analytics and have a strong interest in becoming a researcher in health sciences or pursuing a career in the healthcare industry.
This unique experience serves as an entrée into the healthcare data analytics world as it is not heavily focused on math, algorithm, or computing but rather on the practical applications of machine learning, data mining, and statistics as well as a variety of qualitative methodology in life and health sciences and healthcare industry. Duke Kunshan professors in global health and guests from the healthcare industry in conjunction with post-graduate student workers will teach the program.
