Locations
During this bootcamp, students will first gather at Duke Kunshan University, a modern institution blending Eastern and Western educational philosophies, where you will participate in an official opening ceremony and attend thematic academic lectures, setting the intellectual stage for their cultural exploration.
Students will then visit the Kunshan Opera Museum, where a rich collection of theatrical artifacts and immersive exhibitions will provide a systematic introduction to Kunqu Opera—known as the “ancestor of a hundred operas”—allowing them to intimately experience Jiangnan’s melodic charm.
The journey will also take students to Zhouzhuang, known as “China’s No. 1 Water Town.” Wandering through historical landmarks such as the Twin Bridges, Shen Residence, and Zhang Residence, students will immerse themselves in the traditional landscape of small bridges, flowing streams, and local dwellings, gaining insight into the enduring presence and evolution of water town culture in modern life. This itinerary, which includes modern academic spaces, a traditional opera sanctuary, and a living, breathing ancient town, will take students through multiple layers of Jiangnan culture, connecting them with both the historical depth and the vibrant present.
On day 3, students will travel to Shanghai, a global metropolis where history and the future intersect, on a cultural journey that combines tradition and modernity. They will have the opportunity to visit the Shanghai Museum, a cultural treasure trove with over a million artifacts. The museum’s renowned collections of bronzeware, ceramics, and paintings present the thread of Chinese civilization across millennia, serving as a vital gateway to understanding the intertwined evolution of Jiangnan culture and Central Plains heritage.
Following that, students will walk along the Bund, which is an open-air gallery of colonial-era architecture that lines the Huangpu River. They will see a variety of architectural styles, from Classical Revival to Modernism, while learning about Shanghai’s history as the Far East’s financial hub. Looking across the river at Lujiazui’s soaring skyline, they will witness a dialogue between past and present, gaining insight into the city’s remarkable transformation over time.
The final destination for students is Chengdu—a “Land of Abundance” where ancient heritage and vibrant modernity intertwine.
Here, they will journey to Sanxingdui, standing amidst mysterious bronze masks and sacred bronze trees to experience the splendor and wonder of the ancient Shu civilization. Dujiangyan, an irrigation system that has nourished the fertile plains of Sichuan for over two millennia, gaining insight into the wisdom of harnessing nature in harmony with its ways. Ascending Mount Qingcheng, they will walk through verdant peaks to discover the birthplace of Chinese Taoism. They will also venture to the Panda Valley, where the nation’s treasured giant pandas roam gracefully amidst lush bamboo groves—a living testament to China’s unwavering commitment to ecological conservation and species preservation.
From prehistoric civilizations to cultural brilliance, natural habitats to a future shaped by innovation, Chengdu, with its rich cultural heritage and poised, creative spirit, brings the study tour to a fitting close.
