Overview

Based on the institutional partnerships, Duke Kunshan University will organize students to attend AI and Machine Learning Summer Program held at DKU Global Summer Institute (GSI) and St. Antony College, Oxford. The program is designed as a cross-border initiative that includes TWO Phases: one week at DKU (7.23-7.28) and two weeks at Oxford (7.30-8.12). Participant needs to select one program from GSI Session 1 (Design Thinking & Social Entrepreneurship / Machine Learning / Environmental Sustainability) on July 23 – 28 before going to Oxford.

Diagnosing disease, predicting weather events, identifying fraud, personal assistants who anticipate our next desire (Alexa, Siri, Cortana, etc.), we have all heard about the new amazing things machine learning can do, but do you understand how these algorithms work and when we can expect them to work and, perhaps more importantly, when and why they fail? As a data scientist or machine-learning practitioner, you will be asked to explain how your algorithm works when it works and why your algorithm failed when it fails, and there will be times when it fails! We will discuss reasons algorithms may fail in this summer.

The program will be discussion-oriented requiring a high degree of participation by students in the classroom and extracurricular activities. Upon successful completing of the program, participant will receive a certification of completion delivered by DKU and 6 ECTS credits (credits in the European System).

What will you learn from this program?

For the one-week learning experience at DKU, students will be able to:

Learn the fundamentals and interdisciplinary knowledge offered by one of the three programs in GSI Session 1: Design Thinking & Social Entrepreneurship / Machine Learning / Environmental Sustainability.

For the two weeks at Oxford, students will be able to:

  • Be able to identify and understand applications of AI
  • Broadly understand and apply principles of machine learning
  • Have some understanding of the ethical, moral and social implications of the use of AI
  • Have some skill in using a commonly used computer language used in the field of AI (Python) and in a commonly used programming environment used in AI, Machine Learning
  • Apply machine learning libraries to solve common problems in both supervised and un-supervised Machine Learning
  • Have an introductory appreciation of more advanced tools of AI – specifically ‘Deep Learning’ (Neural networks) and Reinforcement Learning

Requirements and Prerequisites

1. Prerequisites: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics

For the two weeks at Oxford, familiarity with the basics of Python is required additionally, before the course starts.

2. Good English proficiency required for non-native English speakers, pass CET-4, CET-6/TOEFL (85)/IELTS (6.5) preferred.

3. Excellent academic performance, minimum GPA 3.0/4.0.

4. Strong interests in pursuing graduate programs at DKU preferred.

5. AI & Machine Learning Program at Oxford is the optional choice only for students who participates in Session 1 (students need to select one program in DKU Session 1 before participating in Oxford program).
